PG Moving Checklist for Jaipur: What to Pack & Do

The week before a PG move has a particular flavour: three shopping trips, one overweight suitcase, and at least one argument about whether you really need to carry a bucket across state lines. (You don't. We'll get to that.) Having welcomed hundreds of students and working women into our Jaipur residences, we've seen what people over-pack, under-pack, and forget entirely. Here's the checklist we wish everyone had.

Step 1: Documents First

Everything else can be bought in Jaipur. These can't. Keep them in one folder in your hand luggage, never in checked baggage or a courier box.

• Aadhaar card (original + 3–4 photocopies)
• College admission letter / offer letter or company offer letter for working women
• College or employee ID (or the paperwork to get one)
• Passport-size photos — carry 6–8; you'll use them for SIM cards, college forms, and registrations
• PG agreement or booking confirmation — a good PG gives you written terms; ours cover the 1-month advance, 6-month lock-in, and 1-month notice period in writing
• Bank passbook / debit card and any scholarship or education loan papers
• Medical prescriptions if you take regular medication, plus a copy of any relevant reports

Digital backup: photograph every document and store copies in your email or cloud drive. Two minutes now saves a panic later.

Step 2: What a Good PG Already Provides (So Don't Pack It)

This is where most people waste luggage space and money. If you've chosen a well-run girls PG in Jagatpura or Malviya Nagar, a surprising amount is already waiting for you. At our residences, for example, every room comes with:

• A proper bed with an 8-inch mattress — leave the mattress, and the folding cot, at home
• Air conditioning in every room — no need to buy a cooler or table fan on day one
• Attached washroom — so no shared-bathroom kit with slippers-for-the-corridor logistics
• Free WiFi — skip the dongle
• A modular self-cook kitchen with chimney, induction, gas, and RO water — you don't need to smuggle in an electric kettle or a water filter
• Biometric entry and CCTV — no duplicate keys to cut

Always confirm what your specific PG includes before you shop. One phone call can save you a few thousand rupees and half a suitcase.

Step 3: The Actual Packing List

Bedding and room

• Two bedsheet sets and pillow covers (the PG provides the mattress; sheets are personal)
• A light blanket or comforter — Jaipur winters are genuinely cold, and a warm quilt from home beats anything you'll buy in a hurry
• A small mattress protector if you like one
• Curtain-safe fairy lights, photos, or whatever makes a room feel like yours

Clothing (think in seasons)

• Everyday wear for the current season
• Winter layer: Jaipur drops sharply from November to February — pack at least one proper jacket, a couple of sweaters, and warm sleepwear, or plan a winter shopping trip
• Summer: light cottons; the AC handles the rest indoors
• One or two formal or festive outfits — college fests, presentations, and Jaipur weddings happen
• Comfortable footwear, flip-flops for the room, and one pair you can walk the old city in

Toiletries and personal care

• A starter kit for the first week; everything is replaceable at local shops
• Any specific brands you're loyal to that small shops may not carry
• A small first-aid pouch: paracetamol, band-aids, ORS, your regular medicines

Kitchen (light touch)

Since a self-cook kitchen with utensils infrastructure is already there, keep this minimal:

• One plate, bowl, mug, spoon, and a small knife if you like your own set
• A steel water bottle
• Masala dabba or a few home spice packets — the single most homesickness-curing item in any suitcase
• A couple of airtight containers for snacks from home

Study and work

• Laptop, chargers, and a multi-plug extension board (the unsung hero of PG life)
• Earphones or headphones — essential courtesy in shared rooms
• Basic stationery to survive week one; Jagatpura and Malviya Nagar have plenty of stationery shops

The small things people forget

Step 4: What NOT to Bring

• Bucket, mug, broom — available locally for less than the courier cost
• Mattress, pillow-in-a-giant-bag — provided
• Induction plate, kettle, water filter — the PG kitchen covers this
• A term's worth of groceries — Jagatpura and Malviya Nagar have everything from kirana shops to supermarkets
• Expensive jewellery — leave it home; bring one or two everyday pieces at most

Step 5: Your First-Week Setup Plan

Moving in is half the job. Here's how to be fully operational within seven days:

Day 1–2: Land and settle. Complete your PG paperwork, get your biometric entry registered, join the residents' WhatsApp group, and learn the house basics — kitchen timings, laundry arrangements, who to call for what. Unpack properly instead of living out of a suitcase; it changes how quickly a room feels like home.

Day 2–3: Get connected. Buy a local SIM (Aadhaar + photo), and test the WiFi with your devices. Set up UPI if you haven't — Jaipur runs on it.

Day 3–5: Map your routine. Do a practice run of your commute to college or office before the first real day. Locate the nearest ATM, pharmacy, general store, and a tiffin service — our PGs are tiffin-friendly and residents will happily share recommendations. Note your nearest hospital (Fortis and Apex serve the Malviya Nagar–Jagatpura side).

Day 5–7: Build the comforts. Buy the hangers, hooks, and containers you now know you actually need. Cook one simple meal in the kitchen to break the ice — kitchens are where PG friendships start. Call home and tell them you're fine, because you are.

A Note for Parents Helping With the Move

If you're dropping your daughter off, plan the trip with one spare day. Day one is for the physical move and paperwork — sign the agreement together, save the PG manager's number (+91 78911 55551 for our residences), and walk the neighbourhood so the area feels known rather than imagined. Day two is for the settling errands that go faster with two people: the SIM card queue, the first grocery run, locating the pharmacy and hospital. Leaving after a calm second day feels completely different from leaving in the chaos of move-in evening — for both of you.

One more practical tip: send the heavy winter items by courier in October rather than hauling them in July. Jaipur's PG rooms have finite cupboard space, and a season-matched wardrobe uses it far better than a year's clothing crammed in at once.
