The Complete Student's Guide to Living in Jaipur

Moving to Jaipur for college is one of those decisions that looks scary on paper and turns out to be genuinely fun in practice. The Pink City is big enough to have everything you need and small enough that you'll feel at home within a month. This guide covers what we tell every student who walks into one of our residences for the first time: where to live, how to get around, what things cost, and how to settle in without the stress.

Which Area Should You Live In?

Jaipur is a spread-out city, and where you live depends almost entirely on where you study.

Jagatpura

Jagatpura is the student capital of Jaipur's south-east. JNU Jaipur and VIT Jaipur are here, and JECRC, SKIT, and Poornima are all within easy reach. The Sitapura Industrial Area, where many students end up interning, is just down the road. Rents are noticeably lower than in central Jaipur, the lanes are full of tiffin services and stationery shops, and Getor Jagatpura railway station keeps you connected. If your college is in this belt, a girls PG in Jagatpura is the obvious move. Our Anand Luxury Girls Home sits about 2 km from both JNU and VIT Jaipur, and A-31 Girls PG on Ramnagariya Road is another solid option in the same neighbourhood.

Malviya Nagar

Malviya Nagar is more established and more central. It's Jaipur's coaching hub — Mangalam Tower and institutes like T.I.M.E. draw thousands of aspirants — and World Trade Park, the city's best-known mall, anchors the area. You pay a little more here, but you get wider roads, better cafes, and shorter rides to most of the city. If you're preparing for competitive exams or studying nearby, look at a girls PG in Malviya Nagar such as Karol's Villa in Siddharth Nagar.

Other areas worth knowing

C-Scheme and Vaishali Nagar are pleasant but pricier and far from the south-east college belt. Most students we host find that Jagatpura or Malviya Nagar covers 90% of their needs.

Getting Around Jaipur

You don't need a vehicle in your first semester. Here's how students actually move around:

• Auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws are everywhere for short hops. Agree on a fare before you sit, or use a metered app.
• Ola and Uber work reliably across the city, including Jagatpura and Malviya Nagar. Bikes and autos on these apps are the cheapest options.
• Low-floor city buses run on major routes and are very budget-friendly, though less frequent in the outer areas.
• The Jaipur Metro serves the central and western corridors. It won't help much for Jagatpura, but it's handy for trips to the old city.
• Trains: Getor Jagatpura railway station is about 3 km from our Jagatpura residences, useful for trips home.
• Airport: Jaipur International Airport is roughly 8 km from the Jagatpura side, which makes flying in and out genuinely painless.

Many students eventually get a scooty in second year. Check that your PG has parking — A-31 Girls PG does.

What Does a Month in Jaipur Cost?

Jaipur is one of the more affordable big cities for students. Here's a realistic monthly picture for a PG resident:

A comfortable student month lands somewhere between ₹12,000 and ₹18,000 all-in for shared accommodation. One tip: a PG with a proper self-cook kitchen and no compulsory mess charge gives you real control over your food budget. All three of our residences work this way — modular kitchens with induction, gas, chimney, and RO water, and you're free to order a tiffin instead.

Food: Eating Well on a Student Budget

Jaipur takes food seriously, and so should you.

• Tiffin services are the backbone of student life here. Home-style dal, sabzi, roti delivered daily. Our PGs are tiffin-friendly, and residents share recommendations constantly.
• Self-cooking is the cheapest and healthiest option once you learn three or four basic dishes. A kitchen with RO water and an induction plate is all you need.
• Local legends: try pyaaz kachori, dal baati churma, and lassi at the famous old-city spots at least once. Weekend trips to the walled city for street food are a rite of passage.
• Cafes: Malviya Nagar and the World Trade Park area have plenty of cafes for coffee-fuelled group study.

Where to Study Outside Your Room

• College libraries are the default, but they close early on some campuses.
• Cafes around World Trade Park and Malviya Nagar are laptop-friendly and open late.
• Your PG common areas — honestly, a quiet AC room with good WiFi beats most cafes during exam season, which is why we treat fast, free WiFi as non-negotiable in our residences.

Settling In: SIM, Bank, and Paperwork

Sort these in your first week:

1. SIM card: Carry your Aadhaar and a passport photo to any Jio, Airtel, or Vi store. Activation is usually same-day. Keep your home number active until the new one works.
2. Bank account: Most students simply keep their home-branch account and use UPI, which works everywhere in Jaipur, from tea stalls to rickshaws. If you need a local branch, the big banks all have branches in Jagatpura and Malviya Nagar.
3. Documents to keep handy: Aadhaar, college ID and admission letter, a few passport photos, and your PG agreement. Good PGs give you written terms — ours include a 1-month advance, a 6-month lock-in, and 1-month notice, all on paper.
4. Local address proof: Your PG agreement usually works for SIM and delivery registrations.

Festivals: The Best Part of Living Here

Jaipur doesn't do festivals halfway.

• Teej and Gangaur bring processions through the old city that are worth skipping a lecture for (we didn't say that).
• Diwali turns the whole city, especially the markets, into a light show. Johari Bazaar during Diwali week is unforgettable.
• Makar Sankranti in January means kites. The entire sky fills with them, and every rooftop becomes a party.
• Jaipur Literature Festival each winter draws writers and speakers from around the world, and student entry is easy.

Living in a women-only residence doesn't mean missing out — festival evenings at our PGs tend to turn into group outings and rooftop chai sessions.

A Quick Word on Choosing Where You'll Live

Your room is where you'll sleep, study, cry before exams, and celebrate after them. Prioritise safety (biometric entry, CCTV), hygiene (attached washrooms, proper mattresses), and honest terms (no brokerage, written agreements, no forced mess). Whether you pick a women's hostel in Jaipur or a premium PG, visit in person before you decide.
